A study by the Pew Internet & American Life Project found a massive boom in tablet popularity among 25% of adults over the past 12 months. As you might expect, the iPad is the most popular device at the moment. Apple's tablet holds over 52% of the market. However, the leadership of apple tablets is likely to end soon.

Tablets based on the Android operating system are catching up with the leader by leaps and bounds. It will take a little time, and it is likely that they will "take the helm."

The remaining 48% of the market is shared by Android tablets from various manufacturers, with Amazon's Kindle Fire accounting for 21% of that share. Apple devices are still the most popular right now, but rivals are quickly gaining momentum and starting to step on their heels.

If you remember 2011, the iPad had a whopping 81% of the market, while Android devices managed to attract only 15%. The situation has changed rapidly over the past 12 months. The Pew Research Center believes this may be the result of the recent emergence of numerous new Android devices.

The experts also note that these forces have leveled off even before Google released the Nexus 7 and before the Kindle Fire HD. With this in mind, it becomes clear that Android has a good chance of hitting par with the iPad, if not outperforming.

As for smartphones, in this segment, Android continues to confidently claim the first place in terms of the number of consumers in the United States, with 46% of users already working with devices based on the Google platform. By comparison, the iPhone accounts for 38%, while RIM's dying BlackBerry platform only accounts for 10%.
