While the iPhone 5's launch hit all records, it fell short of Wall Street and most analysts' expectations, as the limited number of phones released couldn't keep up with strong demand.

Recall that the record for iPhone 5 sales is 5 million units sold over the weekend (including Friday), and last year's record for iPhone 4S sold was only 4 million.

Analyst Gene Munster of Piper Jaffray said sales were so low just because they assumed the sales would include online pre-orders. Behind his suggestions, Apple may have limited the number of iPhone 5 shipments to 22 countries that will start selling this coming Friday.

Brian Marshall and the ISI Group team noted in his address to investors that the total amount of Apple's sales also does not include units that have already been sent, but have not yet been delivered to customers, because Apple must have a signature on the receipt of the goods by the customer before the device can be would be considered sold. Thus, B. Marshall suggests that several million iPhone 5 units are still on the way to the consumer, which will increase the total sales of Apple in the future.

Analyst Brian White of Topeka Capital Markets is also unconcerned about Apple's sales in the first three days. He said that the low compared to expectations is due to the delivery options, as well as the fact that many customers did prefer online ordering and are still waiting to touch their iPhone 5.

White also pointed out that along with the start of sales of the iPhone 5 in the coming weeks, the start of sales of the iPad mini is expected.

According to J. Munster, Apple will be able to achieve a balance between supply and demand by the end of the fourth quarter, so it does not change its forecast of reaching the 49 million mark of iPhone 5 sales during the holiday shopping period.

Apple chief executive Tim Cook said the demand for the iPhone 5 was "incredible" and that his company sold the initial shipments. He also noted that the company has already begun to send most of the pre-orders to consumers, but many of them will be sent no earlier than October.
