Google developers have optimized the image of our planet, which is the basis of the Google Maps service, bringing it to a quality of 15 meters per point (pixel) and removing natural distortion in the form of clouds. From now on, Google Maps has the highest quality public image of the Earth.
The still existing photos of the planet, taken by the Apollo 17 satellite from an altitude of almost 30 thousand kilometers, have outlived their usefulness (the last cardinal change in the best photograph of the Earth is dated 2005), which inspired Google specialists to create new images. For this, terabytes of data were used, received from the group of satellites "morning constellation" led by LandSat 7. It is known that the company also abandoned the NASA-developed pseudo-color of the Earth, using technologies for transferring natural shades transmitted by our planet.
New Google Maps imagewas cleared of clouds and other natural distortions, which significantly influenced the detailing - now you can see almost every corner of the globe to the smallest detail (with the exception of "secure" objects like the White House in the USA, NATO military bases in Germany and the Netherlands, defense research institutes, etc. etc.). By the way, in addition to the existing ones, there are also fictional objects on Google maps, such as the ghost town of Argleton in the UK discovered in 2009. This misinformation is most likely a modern interpretation of the old method of copyright protection - ancient cartographers put non-existent elements on maps so that plagiarism was immediately noticeable.
Thus, Google is trying to maintain a leading position among the developers of map services, including Yandex Maps, Apple Maps and others.
