Samsung is steadily continuing to strengthen its position in the mobile processor market. As reported by The Wall Street Journal today, the South Korean company on Tuesday announced a deal to acquire a division of the British company CSR.
Cambridge Silicon Radio's mobile division, which specializes in Bluetooth, GPS and Wi-Fi chips for mobile devices, cost Samsung $ 310 million. In doing so, the South Korean tech giant has decided to strengthen its patent portfolio.
The deal, which is expected to close in the fourth quarter of this year, is expected to help Samsung, the sole manufacturer of custom ARM-based processors for iOS devices, consolidate its place in the market.
According to the informational messages that have appeared, Apple wants to refuse cooperation with Samsung in terms of supplying the latter processes for Apple mobile devices due to the flared up patent disputes. According to some reports, a Taiwanese company (Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company) claims the place of Samsung. But most likely, this will be possible only after 2014.
Apple is said to have signed an agreement with TSMC to manufacture ARM products last year. However, Samsung's Austin, Texas-based manufacturing facility is believed to remain Apple's sole processor supplier.
