Great news for cycling enthusiasts: thanks to the update of Google Maps, it is now possible to get a bike route from "point A" to "point B" in some European countries.
Unfortunately, this news does not apply to CIS residents: full functionality is available only for residents of Germany, Ireland, Liechtenstein, Luxembourg, Poland and France.
According to Google's product manager Kai Hansen, Cycling Navigation, powered by Google Maps, will guide cyclists as far from highways as possible. To get the best results, Google partnered with some of the European cyclists' associations to help collect the necessary data on cycling paths.
For users in the United States and Canada, this feature has been available since 2010. However, collecting and processing the necessary information is a rather long and difficult process, so the number of countries in which this function is available is growing rather slowly. Since last July, cyclist navigation has become available to users from Austria, Australia, Belgium, Great Britain, Denmark, Germany, Ireland, Liechtenstein, Luxembourg, Monaco, the Netherlands, Norway, Finland, France, Sweden and Switzerland.
