One of the main signs that Apple's new cylindrical Mac Pro is for professionals, beyond its name, is its high cost. The AppleInsider resource specialists tried to put together a similar Windows-based station to compare the possible difference between an Apple computer and a similar device from other manufacturers.
In this experiment, the AppleInsider team used data from one of the largest American online stores, popular among fans of self-assembly their computers. As a benchmark for comparison, the model of the new Mac Pro was chosen at a cost of $ 9,599 thousand, the configuration of which contains:
- Intel Xeon E5 12-core processor running at 2.7 GHz with 30 MB L3 cache;
- 64GB (4x16GB) 1.866MHz DDR3 ECC RAM;
- 1TB PCIe-based Flash;
- Dual AMD FirePro D700 GPUs with 6GB GDDR5 VRAM each.
One of the highest-rated ATX-compatible cases - PC-7B Lian Li for $ 89.99 was chosen as a "container" for the computer components. The PC-7B case does not include a power supply, so we had to add a 650-watt CMPSU-650TX power supply from Corsair for $ 89.99 to it. It provides the power to run both power hungry GPUs as well as Intel's latest and greatest processor.
Two AMD FirePro W9000 chips were chosen as GPUs for the hypothetical setup for $ 3,399.99 each. Consequently, only two AMD FirePro video cards “pulled” almost $ 7,000 in the retailWhen store. Their technical parameters correspond to Mac Pro video cards with 6 GB of GDDR5 memory with a bandwidth of 264Gbps. True, it cannot be said with complete certainty that they are absolutely identical to the chips that Apple used in the new Mac Pro. However, as far as the processor is concerned, the experimenters were in luck, since Intel's Xeon E5-2697 Ivy Bridge chip with 12 processing cores based on 22nm technology can be freely purchased for $ 2,749.99.
In terms of data storage, the most specs about Mac Prothe OCZ RevoDrive 3X2 960 GB memory came up for about $ 3,000, although it is not so easy to find it on sale. The RAM was taken from Kingston Technology - four 64 GB DDR3 1866 RAM modules for $ 209.99 each, for a total of $ 839.96.
All of these components needed a motherboard with a Xeon-compatible LGA 2011 socket, 1866MHz DDR3 RAM support, and ample PCI Express slots for two video cards and a solid set of memory modules. All these requirements are met by Asus's Z9PE-D8 board, which also features USB 3.0 and FireWire connectivity. The cost of this pleasure is only $ 539.99.
And, since a computer is not only a set of parts, experts have added the necessary software to the hardware - a licensed version of Windows 8.1 Pro for $ 199.99.
Excluding shipping costs, the costs of assembling and debugging the computer, and other complications that might arise in the process of creating a “challenger”, “Mac on Windows” cost just over $ 14,300.
In addition, the Mac replacement lacks Thunderbolt connectivity and is 300% larger. And what can we say about such an “intangible” advantage of Apple products as the AppleCare warranty service program, which does not include a “homemade” computer. It turns out that the new Mac Pro is not that expensive if it takes almost $ 6,000 additional investment to make a replica. It is worth thinking about those who prefer to independently make computers for themselves.
