Not so long ago, we described the serious competition that has arisen recently among the developers of instant messengers. However, at that time there was still no information about such an application for messaging as Telegram, which, apparently, is quite capable of influencing the distribution of "prize" places in the segment.

Recall that Telegram was presented by Digital Fortress, which actually belongs to the founder of Vkontakte. As has already happened, Pavel Durov did not hide the use of some WhatsApp developments, however, he urged to evaluate the prevailing capabilities of his service. He also noted that the current version of Telegram is far from final and the main goal of the release is to test the MTProto data transfer protocol developed by Pavel's brother Nikolai. Jan Koum did not appreciate such zeal and openly accused Durov of widespread plagiarism of other people's projects. Forbes.ru observersdecided to test the arguments of both parties in a practical test, comparing the work of messengers on the iPhone 4 (Telegram, at the moment, is available exclusively to users of devices on the iOS platform).
Dialogues
The design of the dialog boxes of both applications is almost identical - the same customizable wallpapers, the same checkboxes for the message status, etc. The functionality of Telegram and WhatsApp in dialogue mode is also not much different - both services allow you to delete, copy or forward messages, as well as attach media files to them.

The only significant difference noted by reviewers is that the Telgram application is characterized by faster loading and sending of large images, WhatsApp copes with a similar task much slower.
Collective chat
In the collective chat mode, Telegram simply “destroyed” the opponent. For starters, it's worth noting that WhatsApp supports half the number of simultaneous chat users (50 versus 100 for Telegram). At the same time, each active participant in the collective chat in Telegram can add new users to the conference, in the WhatsApp application this can only be done by the chat organizer.

However, more significant results were obtained when testing applications under heavy load - several users continuously sent short messages and "heavy" images to the chat. As a result of this "attack", the WhatsApp applicationcompletely stopped functioning and practically "stuck", while Telegram continued to work, albeit with delays.
Adding images
The interface for adding images to WhatsApp, which not so long ago seemed close to perfect, also loses to a daring beginner. Unlike the "pioneer", Telegram allows you to upload groups of photos, view full-screen previews and even select multiple images with a swipe - further confirmation that the developers of Digital Fortress have thoroughly studied the strengths and weaknesses of a competitor.

It should be noted that such comparatively small advantages of Telegram are tracked at almost every step. It seems that the words of Pavel Durov that it was time for the creator of WhatsApp to get nervous were justified.
Profile settings
As mentioned above, both messengers allow you to customize the background image of the chat, save and forward media files. In addition, both Telegram and WhatsApp have the ability to configure notifications for messages from dialogs and collective chats.

The only benefit found with WhatsApp is the ability to import images from your FaceBook account, as well as send saved stories by e-mail.
Additional features
In this component, Forbes.ru observers recorded a draw - Telegram boasts a function to search for images using the Bing search engine and instantly attach them to a message, and WhatsApp has a recently added voice message function.

In general, the situation is clearly in favor of the freshly baked messenger from Digital Fortress - the functionality and performance of Telegram already at this stage surpasses those of the "old man" WhatsApp.
