Over the past few years, manufacturers, professional developers and enthusiasts have experimented relentlessly, trying to turn a smartphone into a full-fledged camera and vice versa.

Autonomous cameras running Android, smartphones with lenses with impressive optical zoom characteristics or with fantastic matrix parameters that any professional device would envy, high-end cameras with the communication capabilities of a mobile phone were created. And there are a lot of accessories and various "add-ons" to smartphones that expand their capabilities in the field of photography. In addition, Wi-Fi / NFC communication modules are now a standard function of the camera, and it is simply impossible to imagine a smartphone without a camera. But, it is still impossible to consider that the line between a smartphone and a camera has been broken, although attempts continue.

Snappgrip is another unique gadget based on the idea that a huge number of people use their smartphone as a camera. For quite a long time, the idea was formed into various concepts, until a prototype was presented at CES 2013, and a fundraising company was launched on Kickstarter. By the way, the project was able to attract more than $ 45 thousand, which allowed it to enter the stage of practical implementation. Currently, the gadget is already available for pre-order and can be delivered to customers at the end of March.
So what exactly is Snappgrip ? In a nutshell, this is the part of the camera that houses the camera controls and serves to hold it comfortably with one hand. Snappgrip attaches to a special iPhone case that comes with the gadget. The connection of the device to the smartphone is carried out via Bluetooth, allowing the use of physical elements to control the smartphone camera. You will need to download the free Snappgrip iOS app for the device to work. The company says it will open its API to third-party developers so they can use Snappgrip's capabilities in their programs.

A shutter button is located on the top of the device, which works the same way as with conventional digital cameras with autofocus: in order to take a picture, you first need to lightly press the button for the system to focus, and then shoot. There are also physical buttons here that control the zoom function of the iPhone camera.

A mode dial is also present, however it is not intended for manual selection of exposure (shutter speed and aperture). It allows you to change the screen orientation from landscape to portrait, switch to video mode and enable / disable the flash. There is also a standard tripod mount. The cost of the gadget is almost $ 70.

Snappgrip gives iPhone photographers a better grip, physical camera control, and tripod connectivity. Will it transform smartphone owners into professional photographers? Hardly.
