Nowadays, when for many users the iPhone is more of a camera than anything else, low-quality photos taken with the phone have sunk into oblivion (at least for Apple fans). It’s not just the megapixels, but the extra features that make the iPhone outperform many DSLRs.

One such feature is Tap To Focus, which first appeared on the iPhone 3GS in 2009. Recently, Apple received a patent describing "a device for capturing images using a touch screen to control camera settings." This document provides several ways to control the built-in camera in an iPhone or iPad using touch screen taps to change exposure and focus.
In case the scene changes, the camera returns to the default auto focus mode.
Apple's patent application for “a device for capturing images using a touch screen to control camera settings” was filed July 17, 2012.
