Bad news for fans of Apple's smallest tablet, the iPad mini. The BGR edition, citing a knowledgeable source, reports that Cupertino no longer plans to update the device. But why?

The main reason is weak sales. Consumers are increasingly opting for the Plus version of the iPhone and the new generation of lighter, thinner iPads instead of the 8-inch tablet.
ON THE TOPIC: Which iPad to choose and buy in 2017: all models, comparison and prices.
Apple doesn't really pay much attention to iPad mini in recent years. So, the current flagship of the line - iPad mini 4 - was introduced in 2015 and even by conservative standards Apple runs on a fairly old "hardware" (Apple A8 processor). In total, over the 5 years of the iPad mini's existence, Apple has updated the tablet only three times (and one of the upgrades brought only Touch ID and a gold color to the device). Industry experts are confident that such rare updates are also a sign that the manufacturer has lost interest in the product.
BGR's source does not say exactly when the iPad mini will be discontinued.

Today Apple offers Russian consumers only the iPad mini 4 version with 128 GB of internal memory. The option with Wi-Fi costs 29,990 rubles, with a 4G modem - 10,000 rubles more. Interestingly, this isn't Apple's cheapest tablet - the introduced iPad in 2017 with a 9.7-inch display and a more powerful A9 processor costs 24,990 and 34,990, respectively. True, on the side of the iPad mini 4 there is a more technologically advanced display made using lamination technology and equipped with an anti-reflective coating.

It's worth noting that Apple hasn't given up on trying to bring new tablets to market. According to recent reports, the company is developing a new "frameless" iPad Pro with a 10.5-inch display. Narrow bezels keep it the same size as a 9.7-inch iPad, while a larger display will appeal to corporate customers and educational institutions (the 9.7-inch iPad doesn't have enough screen real estate, but the 12.9-inch iPad Pro has too much) … It is quite possible that the presentation of the new iPad will take place in early June at the next WWDC conference.
