Yesterday, November 12, on the website of the Computer History Museum and the Digibarn Computer Museum, with permission from Apple, the source code of the DOS disk operating system of the Apple II computer was published. Released in 1978, the Apple II is the first fully assembled computer. Then the cost of the base model with a memory capacity of only 4 KB was $ 1298.

A blog post published by the Computer History Museum reveals that Apple hired Paul Laughton of Shepardson Microsystems to build a disk operating system for the Apple II within seven weeks. On April 10, 1978, Jobs and Shepardson signed a contract under which Apple pledged to pay $ 13,000 for a file manager, BASIC interface and utilities. The source code released today is a scanned copy of the original document that Loughton had kept for over thirty years.

The museums also intend to publish the source code for other historical software - Apple Macpaint and Quickdraw, as well as Adobe Photoshop. You can view the source code for the Apple II on the Computer History Museum's website, which also details the creation process. In addition, the site features other documents Loughton had kept over the years, including meeting notes and original contracts between Steve Jobs and Shepardson Microsystems to create the DOS operating system for the Apple II computer.
