While the main focus of Apple enthusiasts is on increasing the diagonal of new smartphones, few have paid attention to the technical innovations, so to speak, "under the hood" of the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus, in particular, the possibility of using the H.265 video codec.

Both smartphones will support the state-of-the-art H.265 codec, also known as High Efficiency Video Coding, for encoding and decoding FaceTime video calls over cellular networks, according to the new iPhones specifications page. The devices also support the old H.264 codec, which Apple has used in Apple TV and iPad devices since the third generation.
According to experts, the use of the H.265 codec will halve the bitrate while maintaining video quality similar to H.264, which, in turn, will significantly reduce the traffic volume in congested cellular networks.
Thus, the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus will have a serious advantage over other smartphones in the field of mobile video calls, where, as you know, network bandwidth is extremely critical.

It is not yet known exactly how the support for the H.265 codec is implemented, however, some experts suggest that the new A8 chip contains a special video encoding / decoding module, which was not previously found in Apple smartphones. Experts also note that Apple desktop computers have sufficiently powerful CPUs for software processing of video signals, which are encoded with the H.265 codec, while mobile devices need a special hardware module.
The H.265 codec is a joint development of the ITU-T Video Coding Experts Group (VCEG) and the MPEG Moving Picture Expert Group. The standard recommendation was developed in response to the growing demand for higher compression rates for moving images for a wide variety of applications such as Internet streaming, data transmission, video conferencing, digital storage devices and broadcast television. Frame formats up to 8K (UHDTV) with a resolution of 8192 × 4320 pixels are supported.

During the presentation of the new iPhones, Phil Schiller noted that the new graphics processor in the A8 is 50% more powerful than that of the previous generation chip, and the CPU performance has increased by a slightly more modest amount - by 25%.
All the advantages of the H.265 codec can be appreciated with the release of the new iPhones, which will be sold on September 19 in 9 countries around the world. Sales in Russia will start on September 26.
