2020 IPad Pro Review: Apple's First Dual-camera Tablet (price, Specs, Design)

While the whole world is fighting the coronavirus epidemic, all high-profile presentations are either canceled or postponed - people are frankly not up to it. But that couldn't stop Apple from announcing its new tablet. Still, the previous generation iPad Pro arrived at the end of 2018, and the line clearly needed an update.

Paying attention to the tablet in 2020 is also worthwhile because, in addition to a number of improvements, the manufacturer also focuses on device positioning - a universal tool that can replace a laptop in most cases.

What is the 2020 iPad Pro.

2020 iPad Pro design and dimensions

The tablet has retained its previous appearance - a rectangular shape with rounded edges, a relatively thin frame of the same width around the entire perimeter and the absence of a Home button. The model comes in two versions - with a diagonal of 11 and 12.9 inches. The screen resolution remains the same - 2388 × 1688 and 2732 × 2048 pixels. iPad Pro received an IPS-matrix with an anti-glare surface, backlighting up to 600 nits and support for a frequency of 120 Hz.

The 11-inch iPad Pro measures 247.6 x 178.5 mm and measures 5.9 mm thick. The larger version is 280.6 mm wide and 214.9 mm high, and the same thickness is 5.9 mm. The predecessors had exactly the same dimensions. But the new models turned out to be a little heavier - 473 g and 643 g versus 468 and 631 g for the 2018 models. Hardly anyone will notice and appreciate this difference - the tablets are still lightweight and relatively compact.

On the top and bottom of the tablet there are 4 speakers - this, among other things, distinguishes the Pro series from its younger counterparts (iPad mini, iPad and iPad Air). There are 3 microphones on the top edge, one more on the left side edge and one at the back, just below the camera module. The tablet has three hardware buttons - the power button on top and two volume buttons on the right.

At the same end there was a place for a nano-Sim card slot and a magnetic surface for connecting a keyboard.

The block of cameras has noticeably changed, now there are two of them. This module still protrudes a little.

Charging and data transfer is carried out through the USB-C connector located on the bottom edge.

The series traditionally does not resort to bright various color solutions. This model is produced in two traditional "strict" versions: silver and space gray.

The tablet received an updated 64-bit A12Z Bionic processor. It is made using a 7-nanometer process and has 8 cores, 4 of which are energy efficient, and 4 are productive. The A12Z Bionic uses the same 8-core Neural Engine and an embedded M12 motion coprocessor.

Difference in performance with its predecessor, A12X, is difficult to notice. Apple itself is not really touting the new processor, speaking only about the ability to work longer in peak conditions. It is likely that the A12Z as a whole repeats its predecessor, having received only an additional pair of cores and an increased operating frequency. There is no need to talk about a revolutionary update, but the previous solution had no performance competitors in its segment anyway.

Both 2020 iPad Pro models come with four storage options: 128GB, 256GB, 512GB, and 1000GB. There is one change relative to its predecessor, but understandable - models with 64 GB storage are already of little relevance, which is why the base version received 128 GB. But all the tablets received 6 GB of RAM, which was also a step forward relative to the 4 GB of its predecessor.

The battery capacity of the 11-inch tablet was 28.65 Wh, while that of the older brother was 36.71 Wh. Apple still guarantees up to 10 hours of Wi-Fi / video playback, or up to 9 hours of LTE operation. Interestingly, the previous generation 11-inch iPad Pro had a slightly higher battery capacity of 29.37 Wh.

2020 iPad Pro cameras

One of the most noticeable external changes happened with the camera - now the flagship tablet has two of them. The wide-angle camera received a resolution of 12 MP and an aperture of f / 1.8, while the second was ultra-wide-angle with a resolution of 10 MP, an aperture of f / 2.4 and a viewing angle of 125 degrees. This module allows you to realize 2x optical zoom and 5x digital. The wide-angle camera can focus both automatically and by touching the screen. There is automatic image stabilization, a bright True Tone flash. The cameras can shoot panoramas with a resolution of up to 63 MP, take Live Photos, support continuous shooting and the Smart HDR function. The LiDAR scanner determines the distance to the object, which will allow better work with augmented reality.

The front True Depth camera has a resolution of 7 MP and f / 2.2, and can shoot video at up to 60 frames per second. The tablet received standard options: Retina Flash, Smart HDR, automatic stabilization, burst shooting. The camera uses Face ID, an exclusive face recognition technology for the iPad Pro line.

Apple Pencil and Magic Keyboard support

For the new iPad, a new Magic Keyboard has been developed, which, due to the magnetic fastening, can hold the device in weight, while changing the angle of inclination.

The keyboard also has a built-in trackpad, which makes it more convenient to work with iPadOS due to multi-touch gestures. It also has its own USB-C port, through which you can charge the tablet itself.

The full-size keyboard features dedicated keys, a scissor mechanism, backlit keys, and responsiveness.

The cost of the second generation Magic Keyboard for iPad Pro is 27,000 rubles and 31,000 rubles, respectively, for the 11- and 12.9-inch version.

Supports 2nd generation Apple Pencil. The stylus helps you use your tablet as a digital notepad.

To charge Apple Pencil, you just need to magnet it to the tablet body.

The tablet does not yet support work in 5G networks, there is support for gigabit 4G LTE with UMTS / HSPA / HSPA + / DC-HSDPA. iPad Pro works with Wi-Fi 802.11ax or Wi-Fi 6, simultaneously dual-band 2.4 and 5 GHz. Supports MIMO technology, Bluetooth 5.0, as well as eSIM in addition to the standard nano-SIM and Apple SIM. The tablet has a digital compass, and the LTE models received a GPS / GLONASS module.
