A black and white photograph is not just a regular “no color” photo. B&W portraits can say more about a subject than color photography! Also "black and white" is better for images with graphics.

For example, photograph scaffolding in "color" and you will get a completely "dim" image. Take the same photo in black and white mode, add contrast - and you get a powerful "grid", which will be a pleasure to look at.
However, the opposite is also true - if you photograph a green apple in front of a red wall at B&W, the difference between the colors will only be in shades of gray. Therefore, the first rule of BW photography is to choose a suitable subject for shooting.
A portrait in black and white is always a good idea.

Other types of photography can do well in both color and black and white. But by removing color, you also remove distractors (that which distracts attention).

The red car in the background or the black and white neon signs lose all their appeal and turn into a gray and lifeless mass.
Of course, the best teacher is experience. But you can always just turn on one of the black and white filters in the iPhone camera and look at the screen. As a result, you will quickly begin to notice how well-defined details show up in black and white. If the picture promises to be successful - do not hesitate a minute and take it right away! And, of course, no one forbids you to turn an already taken color photo into black and white using the same filters. Yes, their options are limited, but this is a great start into the world of B&W photography.

It may surprise you that the B / W section has options for adjusting contrast, etc. of things. And really, why? It's all about … the color!

Let's go back to the "green on red background". In a BW image, the composition would look like gray on gray, i.e. very boring. But if you apply a red filter on the iPhone, then it will pass all the red through it and block the green. In a black and white photo, this manipulation highlights the red and darkens the green. Of course, the green filter does the exact opposite.

Of course, (black and white) light does not end with built-in iOS filters - many third-party applications are happy to offer you a variety of virtual "overlays" before converting to black and white photo. A great example of such an application is Google's Snapseed (screenshots above), which regularly produces a cool final result.

The iOS system application Photos also allows you to do the same work, but there you have no direct control over the color filters: all you can do is move the slider slider left and right until you like the result.
