The popularity of Apple smartphones only continues to grow, and there are more and more such situations. It's time to personalize! In this article, we will talk in detail about creating and setting your own ringtone for an incoming iPhone call using a computer.
Since with the release of macOS Catalina in 2019, Apple decided to ditch the iTunes app, moving its functionality to the standard Finder and Music programs, we will detail all the existing options for old and new Macs, as well as for Windows computers.
In what format are iPhone ringtones (melodies) used?
Unfortunately, using the popular MP3 format as iPhone ringtones will not work. Apple has created its own format for storing ringtones called M4R (iPhone Ringtone File). These files are identical to the AAC or M4A formats (the only difference is the format name).
Ringtone files in M4R format are smaller due to special data compression methods. It is also necessary to note the minimal loss of quality during compression. The main difference between MP3 and M4R regarding the compression algorithm is that the latter supports acoustic masking technology, which allows the compression process to be performed by removing audio information that the human ear cannot perceive.
With the audio to M4R conversion feature in iTunes (for Windows and macOS Mojave and older) and Music (macOS Catalina and newer), users can create ringtones or sound alerts from any audio file, for example, MP3.
Where can I find the MP3 of the song that I want to make an iPhone ringtone?
Try googling a search term such as: download (artist and song title) MP3. We are sure that in most cases, Google will be able to help you find the desired MP3 song.
