In 2019, Apple introduced smartphones with the Pro prefix for the first time. Compared to the regular model, they offer more features, better cameras and a better screen. In the iPhone 11 lineup, there was a place for two "firmware" at once - iPhone 11 Pro and iPhone 11 Pro Max, the main differences between which were only in the screen size and resolution.
The iPhone 11 Pro Max has aroused great interest among lovers of uncompromising solutions - maximum power with maximum display. But in 2020, even the base iPhone 12 has an improved screen and a new processor. Is it able to compete with last year's iPhone 11 Pro Max, especially since they are almost comparable in prices?

The focus on the iPhone 12 is largely due to its redesigned design. The flat edges are reminiscent of the style of the iPhone 4 and the latest iPad Pro. The frames around the screen have been made noticeably smaller.
The iPhone 11 Pro Max has a familiar design from the iPhone X with rounded edges and slightly thicker bezels than the 2020 flagships. The front and back panels of the iPhone 11 Pro Max are made of glass, while the front panel of the 2020 model is protected by Ceramic Shield.
According to Apple, this glass with the strength of ceramics will be 4 times better at protecting the screen when the smartphone is dropped.
The bezel between the bezels on iPhone 12 is brushed aluminum, even though this material is of high quality and is used in the aerospace industry. On the iPhone 11 Pro Max, however, the bezel is made of surgical stainless steel and looks polished.

If we talk about size, last year's flagship is noticeably larger and heavier than its young counterpart:

Obviously, the iPhone 12 will be more comfortable in the hand, whereas if you need a larger screen, then you should give preference to the iPhone 11 Pro Max.

Apple users turned their attention to the Pro models in large part because of the apparently better screen. But this year, even the iPhone 12 got an OLED Super Retina XDR display. The main difference between the displays of these smartphones is the size of the diagonal. The iPhone 11 Pro Max has a 6.5-inch screen, while the iPhone 12 has a 6.1-inch screen. The difference in resolution and density is insignificant - 2688 × 1242 and 458 PPI for last year's model versus 2532 × 1170 and 460 PPI for the current one.
Matrices are similar in capabilities: they support True Tone technology, color gamut P3, have a contrast ratio of 2,000,000: 1. The brightness in HDR mode reaches 1200 cd / m2, but the standard brightness for the iPhone 11 Pro Max is slightly higher - 800 cd / m2 versus 625 cd / m2 for the iPhone 12. This difference will hardly be felt in practice. It can be stated that the screen of even the base model of 2020 was equal in quality to last year's flagship. Screen refresh rates of 120 Hz, like none of the flagship of last year, did not appear in 2020 models.

The iPhone 11 Pro Max is powered by the 7nm A13 Bionic, while the 2020 smartphone has a fresh 5nm A14 Bionic processor. The Neural Engine also updated a generation and doubled the number of cores. Synthetic tests show the superiority of A14 Bionic 20-25% over its predecessor. Machine learning will be 70-80% faster.
Both smartphones received 4 GB of RAM, but the iPhone 12 received a new type of RAM - LPDDR5, which is faster than LPDDR4X in the iPhone 11 Pro Max. But the owners of last year's flagship should not be upset - its performance will last for a long time. In real life scenarios, the difference in speed between the iPhone 12 iPhone 11 Pro Max will be difficult to see.
The base storage size for both models is the same - 64 GB. But if the "firmware" also received options with 256 and 512 GB, then the regular iPhone 12 has more modest options: 128 and 256 GB.

iPhone 11 Pro Max was the first of the iPhones to receive a module of three cameras. These are 12-megapixel wide-angle with f / 1.8, ultra-wide-angle with f 1 / 2.4 and telephoto with f / 2.0 aperture.

But the iPhone 12 has only two cameras in a similar module. And if the super-wide got the same aperture, then the wide-angle one already has f / 1.6, which promises better image quality.

Last year's flagship has better optical stabilization - it is double, in addition to the same 2x optical zoom for reduction, there is also 2x zoom for increase. The digital zoom is 10x, while the iPhone 12 has 5x. Both models received Night Mode, support Deep Fusion technology, but the work with the new Smart HDR 3 speaks in favor of the novelty.
Video shooting capabilities are better on the 2020 model. Both smartphones shoot 4K video at 24, 30 and 60 frames per second and HD video at 30 or 60 frames per second, slow-motion video 1080p 120/240 frames per second. But at the same time, the iPhone 12 was able to shoot HDR video in the Dolby Vision standard and Timelapse in Night mode. Obviously, these opportunities are provided by the new processor. In favor of last year's flagship, you can only present a slightly better optical and digital zoom.
The front-facing TrueDepth camera in the iPhone 12 is better than last year's model. And if the resolution and aperture remained the same - 12 MP and f / 2.2, then the new product received additional bonuses such as Night mode for selfies, Deep Fusion, Smart HDR 3 and the ability to shoot HDR video in the Dolby Vision standard. The iPhone 12 camera enables 1080p FaceTime video calling.
Autonomy and charging iPhone 12 and iPhone 11 Pro Max
The iPhone 11 Pro Max, thanks to its size, received an impressive battery for the iPhone. Its volume is 3960 mAh. This allows the smartphone to watch videos for up to 20 hours. But the iPhone 12 has a battery of only 2815 mAh, which makes it possible to watch 17 hours of video. The winner is clear on this issue.
Both smartphones support fast charging, which allows you to recharge up to 50% charge in 30-35 minutes using the 20W adapter. There is also support for Qi wireless charging. However, the iPhone 12 has the ability to work with MagSafe magnetic charging (sold separately).
By attaching the magnetic connector to the back cover, you can charge your smartphone with up to 15W. But this technology will clearly spawn a fair amount of iPhone 12 accessories.
5G support
If Apple considers the appearance of 5G in the iPhone 12 an important milestone, then for us, unfortunately, this is still an insignificant fact - there are no such networks in Russia, and they are unlikely to appear in the foreseeable future. Received a new smartphone and additional support for navigation systems Galileo, QZSS and BeiDou.
